As part of the development of Reading for Life, Learning Links is currently adapting the program to the internet to help children falling behind in reading at school and living in areas geographically removed from potential volunteer sources.
Reading for Life on-line hopes to bridge the gap of social isolation and insufficient services experienced by students with learning difficulties and disabilities by utilising technology in a creative and innovative manner.
By developing an on-line version of this successful program, we hope to reach hundreds of children in regional areas on our waiting list as well as help those in metropolitan locations removed from volunteer support.
We would like to thank Samsung for their financial support for the development of Reading for Life on-line through the Samsung Digital Hope grants.
We would also like to thank the following organisations and individuals for their help in seeing this program come to fruition.
Unilever Australasia for the inspiration and ongoing support for Reading for Life and Learning Links.
Milk Digital for the design and development of Reading for Life Online and donating a game to the program.
Dr Roslyn Neilson for the adaption and development of the Sutherland Phonological Awareness Test- Revised (SPAT-R) stimulus to be used online.
Audiobrien for reducing the cost of studio recording and editing services.
RMK Voice Productions and Taylor Owynns for reducing the cost of voiceover services.
Jossey Bass Publishing for the permission to utilise the 2006 Fry’s Instant words which is published in the ‘The Reading Teacher’s Book of Lists’ by Edward B. Fry & Jacqueline E. Kress.
New Zealand Council of Educational Research (NZCER) for the permission to utilise the stimulus words from the BURT Word Reading Test online.
Following its development, the program will be trialled with approximately 75 students from a range of different locations. They will receive individual literacy assessments that will provide their families with valuable and unique information about their educational needs.
Students will be matched individually with a buddy who will work with them once a week on-line taking them through games and activities that enhance their literacy skills and self-confidence.
Following the trial, the program will be evaluated in both quantitative and qualitative terms. This project is a wonderful example of how technology can empower communities to enhance the lives of a group of people significantly disadvantaged within our community.
